In 2006 there were 122,347 reported crashes causing death or injury on Britain's roads in which the first point of contact on the vehicle was at the rear. 179 people died, 1,783 were seriously injured and 49,813 were slightly injured.

One major factor is the driving population's lack of knowledge of the safe following distances at different speeds - another is their inability to judge such distances accurately.
